  "The little tramp"

The sixteenth day of April in the year 1889 had really been kind in giving this world, and later Hollywood, a prodigious actor and director, whose films have outshone every great film in getting messages across in simpler, emotional and humourous but effective manner. Charlie Chaplin not only proved that camera is the language of silent cinema but also gave cinema the beautiful art of mime.

The eminent cartoonist R.K. Laxman, once said, “The instinct to laugh has survived all the wars, tragedies and sufferings that fill the history of our world.” This is why, perhaps, every film of Charlie Chaplin has observed a good-humoured approach to life. In almost all his films, Charlie Chaplin has shown some social affair or any political issue as a matter of laughter rather than for serious concern.

However, it would be a mistake to say that only humour has been the core of Chaplin’s films. In fact, every film of Chaplin has combined pathos and satire with tender humour. One such film is ‘The Immigrant.’ Released in 1917, this two-reel film not only made Chaplin internationally famous but also showed his great gift for being able to portray social satire on the silver screen.

Another film that showcased Chaplin as a legendary comic actor and director is ‘The Kid.’ ‘The Kid’ was the first feature length film directed by Chaplin in the year 1921. It portrays the story of a little tramp (Charlie Chaplin) and a kid (Jackie Coogan) whom the tramp finds on street as an infant. The story grows with the growing attachment between the two. The conflict situation arises when some people try to hand over the kid to an orphanage. In the end Chaplin manages to elope with the kid and the child is united with his mother.

'The Kid' projects many hilarious situations but at the same time, it is a satire on the conditions of asylums during the beginning of twentieth century. Moreover, in certain scenes ‘The Kid’ also generates pathos. The dream sequence in which, Chaplin is in poignant memories without the child, is the evident example.

It would not be preposterous to say that Chaplin’s work of art on silver screen got a glitz with ‘City Lights’ in 1931. He called the film, “A comedy romance in pantomime.” However, the film continued the vein of social criticism in which the cause of the poor is defended against that of the rich. It is a sentimental film in which the unemployed tramp (Charlie Chaplin) falls in love with a blind flower girl and goes through a series of misadventures, including robbery and a jail term, to raise money for the operation which can restore her sight. ‘City Lights’ was just Chaplin’s another piece of masterwork featuring subtle comedy, spoof and pathos.

Besides, Chaplin’s brilliance was an actor and a mime. The exquisite art of mime can be seen in the last scene of ‘City Lights’ in which, the final shot freezes on Chaplin’s face with stem of a flower in his mouth. This is the scene when he finds the blind flower girl who can now see and recognizes him. Though he accomplishes what he had desired for, an overwhelmed expression on his face tickles a disturbed emotion somewhere within us. This is because perhaps it’s a moment of finding a treasure, which the unemployed tramp does not think himself worth possessing!

As a director, Chaplin produced great works of comic epic. It is said that it’s very tough to make audience laugh and even tougher to sustain the laughter. Undoubtedly, Chaplin’s films have this remarkable quality to sustain a comic situation. Be it the boxing scene in ‘City Lights’ or the scene of making a meal of a boot in ‘The Gold Rush’(1925), Chaplin’s humorous approach to matters have always made people laugh.

Moreover, Chaplin’s handling of character is always according to the requirement of the story plot. For instance, portrayal of the child (Jackie Coogan) in ‘The kid’ is so identical with the way Chaplin acts, be it in walking or clowning around, it’s difficult to realize that he is not the real father of the kid.

Nevertheless, Charlie Chaplin even evolved his image as “the little tramp,” wearing a bowler hat and carrying a cane, strongly. The brilliant characterization and costume of “the little tramp” has kept the spirit of Charlie Chaplin alive even today. This image is so much embedded into the psyche of audiences that even if we find the little clown; in his oversized shoes, baggy pants and an undersized coat; though quite rich at the end of his film ‘The gold Rush,’ we think it’s a delusion.

  Don't be afraid to fail….....
[By M.V.Iyer, Kuwait]

America's master motivator, Zig Zaglar, says that, failure is an event, not a person, no man is ever a failure, provided he has an attitude which compels him to view a failure as a lost opportunity in that particular event…. Failure is an accident, and no more.

So, whenever one gets fired, it does hurt for a while, but like the irrepressible : " HIT ME " TOY, bounce back and start all over again. If you want to have a positive attitude, keep this toy on your desk, in your office, at home. Tomorrow is always another day.

Think about it, we have failed many times, although we may not remember. We fell down the first time we tried to walk, we almost downed the first time we tried to swim, did not we ?

Fear of failure is an attitude problem. Remember this message " DO NOT WORRY ABOUT FAILURE….WORRY ABOUT THE CHANCES WE MISS WHEN WE DON'T EVEN TRY "

All of us postpone things. We prolong, we rationalize, we make excuses, we foolishly believe that, to be creative and to have a positive attitude and to simply do things, we have to have all kinds of preconditions, such as " TO BE MORE CREATIVE I AM WAITING FOR "…Inspiration, Permission, My turn, Someone to ease the way, The rest of the rules, Something to change, More time, The right person, Tomorrow, A better circle of friends, My way to be clear, An absence of risk etc… We probably can find our favorite excuse in the above list, and we might have a dozen more!, But scratch the surface of these smooth and logical rationalization, and if we are honest, we will see the face of a little demon, the " Fear of Failure" hiding there.

The Failure can be depression or magnificent- it is not applied to the present or past, past failure of success. It is only our attitude towards these failure or success which determines our future. We can change our self by changing our attitude without fear of error!, how ?, it is simple. Our mind has hidden treasure, we have to drill to get out what is in store there, like drilling for water or oil. The deeper we drill and dig, the greater are our chances to get GOLD i.e. "SUCCESS ")

President Abdul Kalam's
59th Independence Day address

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
"My Dear Citizens of India,

On the eve of the 59th Independence Day, I extend to you my best wishes for your happiness and prosperity. My greetings to all our people at home and abroad. Let us resolve, on this occasion, to remember with gratitude, the selfless and devoted services of our Armed Forces who are guarding our frontiers on the land, over the sea, and in the air. We are also grateful to the Paramilitary and Police Forces for preserving our internal security and maintaining law and order.

I met 137 freedom fighters from 27 States and Union Territories on 9th August 2005 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. I saw their enthusiasm even at their ripe age, to bring back the nationalism as a living movement. Today our country is free, because the freedom fighters gave their best to the nation in their prime of youth. Honouring the freedom fighters is honouring the independent nation and its spirit of nationalism. We must thank them with respect and make their lives happy.

Nature’s Fury and its Management

While we are celebrating 59th anniversary of our hard earned political independence, we have to remember the sufferings of our people affected by the recent rain and flood in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Orissa. The city of Mumbai and other areas in Maharashtra bore the brunt of nature’s fury. The people of these areas are meeting the challenge with courage and fortitude. The Prime Minister had visited some of the affected areas. I spoke to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra while he was visiting various places affected by the floods and I also shared my concern with other Chief Ministers. Maharashtra needs help at this critical juncture to mitigate the sufferings arising out of loss of life and properties inflicted by the fury of rain and flood. All the States need to express their solidarity with the people of Maharashtra in their time of distress and suffering, and collectively help in removing the pain of the people. Mumbai needs an urgent reconstruction to face unexpected heavy rain, as it happened this year.

Rainfall and Floods:
Rainfall and floods are annual features in many parts of the country. Instead of thinking on interlinking of rivers only at times of flood and drought, it is time that we implement this programme with a great sense of urgency. We need to make an effort to overcome various hurdles in our way to the implementation of this major project.I feel that it has the promise of freeing the country from the endless cycle of floods and droughts. Also, as a measure for
preventing flooding of the streets in the cities due to heavy sustained downpour, I would suggest the Ministry of Urban Development at the Centre and the State governments to mount a programme to rebuild and modernize the infrastructure and storm-water drainage systems including construction of under ground water silos to store the excess water. This water can be treated, processed and used at the time of shortage as practiced in many other countries. Fortunately India has adequate technology and expertise in making underground tunnels for metro rail system. This technology can be used for constructing underground water storage system.

Earthquake Forecasting: Another natural phenomenon that affects and causes damages of high magnitude without pre-warning in many parts of our country is the earthquake. To prevent heavy damage to the people and property, we need to accelerate research for forecasting earthquakes. Research work on earthquake forecasting is being done in many countries. We in India should have an integrated research team consisting of experts drawn from academia, meteorology and Space Departments for creating earthquake forecast modeling using pre-earthquake and post-earthquake data collected from various earthquake occurrences in our country. This can be validated periodically with the proven forecasting data available from other countries.

Earth Systems Science:
Many of the countries in the world have experienced successive calamities driven by the nature. Till recently, the researchers world over had been pursuing research in unconnected ways, in Climate, Earthquake, Ocean Sciences and Earth Sciences, without realizing the latent but tight coupling between these areas. This new realization has prompted many countries to pursue the interdisciplinary area of research which is now known as Earth Systems Science. It is in fact fast emerging as an area of convergence between Earth, Climate, Ocean, Environment, Instrumentation and Computer Sciences. I strongly suggest that India should mount a programme in this emerging area of Earth Systems Science. This will call for a dedicated, cohesive and seamless integration between researchers in multiple areas and in multiple organisations. Further, Earth Systems Science doesn’t obey political or geographical borders. It is truly a science and its intensive results would make our planet safe and prosperous.

Unlike research in strategic areas, wherein the nations have to maintain superiority over other nations, Earth Systems Science is the ultimate realization of the human kind to collaborate since no nation is safe if its neighbours are not. Nature’s fury knows no borders.

Dear citizens, on 26th January 2005, I have discussed with you on the potential for employment generation in eight areas. I am happy that a number of actions are evolving.

“Every eight seconds a person dies of tobacco related disease and almost as quickly another victim is recruited through advertisements. This alarming statement released by World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Dr.Lee Jong Wook, points the finger towards the disastrous effects of tobacco smoking.US surgeon Generals report in 2000 declared that approximately 440,000 Americans die each year of tobacco related diseases.

If we go back to the history ,it can be found that Chinese cultivated and smoked tobacco before the first millennium. Tobacco was introduced into Europe in 16th century and subsequently to Asia. It is interesting to note that the smokers start their habit at their teenage and by the age of 20 they are confirmed smokers. Those who refrained from smoking up to the age of 25 they will not smoke thereafter.

In1995, WHO estimated tobacco smoking was the cause of about 1.44 million male deaths and 475000 female deaths in developing countries. This represents one in four male deaths and about 10% female deaths. Between 1950 and 2000, tobacco will be the cause of over 60 million deaths in developed countries.

Why do people Smoke?
Tobacco smoke contains more than 6000 compounds, the major being Nicotine. Nicotine stimulates the brain. It gives a feeling of relaxation and pleasure. It enhances the existing pleasure. It increase the confidence removes anxiety and irritability. Once the nicotine level in the blood decreases it produces irritability and anxiety and this encourage for another cigarette. This addiction later leads to the hazards of tobacco. The hazards are produced by chemicals present in the tobacco smoke.

They are toxins, cancer producing and promoting (carcinogens) agents. Nicotine, carbon monoxide, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are a few. Once addicted to nicotine, the smoker faces unacceptably increased risk of diseases of nearly every organ of the body.
The effects of tobacco smoke and smoking are wide ranging. Let us examine some of the most common and most lethal health sequelae.

Heart Attack
Smokers in their thirties and forties have a heart attack rate that is five times greater than their nonsmoking peers. In United States, 65,000 deaths each year are due to heart attack and 30%(17000) are caused by smoking. Every person who smokes a pack or more per day increases this risk of heart attack at least 150%(2.5 times chance) and risk of dying of sudden cardiac death by 140%. Smoking lowers the HDL (good cholesterol) which is protective to the heart. Smoking may increase the heart disease in women through an effect on their hormone levels.

Effect on Lungs
The smoke directly enters the lungs, making this organ, the most vulnerable to tobacco related diseases. Long term smoking predisposes to a group of lung diseases, termed as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The smoke directly damages and destroys the lung tissue known as alveoli leading to Emphysema. This is a debilitating disease, which is not reversible and cannot be cured and the person suffers from difficulty in breathing normally and even limiting his normal activities. Chronic bronchitis is another disabling disease with frequent cough, sputum and shortness of breath leading to respiratory failure and heart failure. Stopping smoking arrests the progression of further lung damage.

CANCER

Cancer of the lung is the largest single category of smoking related cancers.90% of lung cancers are due to smoking. A smoker increases his chances of getting lung cancer by 900 %( 10 times chance) and a heavy smoker increase his chance by1400% (15-25times chance). It has been proved that tumor initiators and tumor promoters are present in tobacco smoke. Cigarette smoking is directly responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths in U.S.A.a smoker is 2 times more likely to get a cancer than anon-smoker, and a heavy smoker,4times more likely. The risk of developing cancer of lips, mouth, throat, larynx(voice box),esophagus(food pipe),stomach, kidney, urinary bladder and Pancreas is several times more than a non-smoker.

EFFECT ON NERVOUS SYSTEM

People who smoke a pack a day have almost two and a halftimes the risk of getting a stroke.Strikingly it is found that heavy smoking is a contributory factor of developing erectile dysfunction in men and reduces sperm density and mobility causing infertility.

OTHER EFFECTS
A recent publication in British Medical Journal confirms that smoking causes premature cataract, blindness and blood cancers. Smoking pregnant women carry a greater risk of miscarriage and still birth. Smoking has many adverse effects on bones and joints too.It causes bone thinning or osteoporosis and delay bone healing. The smokers are more prone to fracture of wrists, hips, and spines. Tobacco causes premature facial wrinkling; it stains teeth, fingers and leaves stale smell of breath on the hair and clothes.

PASSIVE SMOKING
Passive or second hand smoking is dangerous to non-smokers.
Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a risk factor for new cases of Asthma in children. The risk of bronchitis and pneumonia is estimated to be50-60% higher in children exposed to ETS. ETS is a cause of lung cancer in lifetime non- smokers and the risk is 20-30 times more than a non-smoker who is not exposed.Another interesting find is that the low-tar,light ultralight cigarettes are of no protective value and the best way is to quit smoking all together.

Quit smoking! How?
It is easy to quit smoking. I have stopped many times.
Mark Twain
It is quite interesting to note that more than 70% of the current British smokers indicate that they would like toquit smoking. Stopping smoking is not an easy task for those who are addicted to tobacco smoke. The strong resolve to quit smoking is of paramount importance and this is the first step. Then the next step is to set a plan to stop smoking completely.Make a list of reasons why you want to stop.

Understand your habit. The health hazards that caused the smoking and the benefits obtained after stopping smoking.

Drug treatment
Nicotine Replacment Therapy. Stopping smoking can result in withdrawal symptoms and this causes an urge to smoke. This can be prevented by using nicotine patches, lozenges, chewing gums, and inhalers

Acupuncture, hypnotherapy have been tried with varying results.

Zyban(buprpion) is a drug` that is available upon prescription and is found to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Preparation
Setting a quit date and deciding on a plan.Once you have made a decision to quit, you are ready to pick a quit date. Make a strong personal commitment to quit on that day.
• Pick the date and mark it on the calendar
• Tell family and friends about your quit date.
• Set up a support system. This could be a group of class, nicotine anonymous, or a friend who has successfully stopped smoking and willing to help you.
• Remove all paraphernalia.(lighter, ashtray)

On your quit day follow these suggestions.

• Do not smoke
• Drink lot of water or fruit juice
• Begin nicotine replacement therapy if that is your choice.
• Avoid situations where the urge to smoking is strong.

Staying quit (Maintenance)
This is very important. Whenever there is temptation, review your reasons for quitting and think of all your benefit to your health.
Ride out the desire. It will go away, but do not fool yourself into thinking that you can have just one.Tobacco smoking bears many health hazards and quitting this bad habit can prevent many fatal and disabling diseases.Let us bid goodbye to smoking now and forever, for a better a better health to the public and community as a whole!!!

Parenting In the Positive
by Debbie Rose
As parents and caregivers I'm sure we can agree that we want to do what is best for our children. If we really search our hearts and are honest we learn that hurting a child, no matter the intention, is not truly in the best interest of the child. Nor is "punishment." But we're at a loss. What's the alternative? Most of us simply know of no other way.

The following are suggestions that have been especially helpful to families, perhaps one just likes yours, and they are beneficial for the whole family.
  • Be trustworthy. Keep your word and do your best to keep agreements.
  • Be a "safe" person your child can talk with and confide in.
  • Eliminate from your life whatever you can that takes your patience away from your child.
  • Practice stress release techniques. Paint, write, walk, and breathe. Make sure you're staying hydrated and drinking enough water. When you're feeling well, you're in a better position to think clearly and be there for your child.
  • Be respectful, kind and supportive of one another. Be courteous. Say "please" and "thank you."
  • Allow all family members (including toddlers) to contribute to the welfare of the family. This empowers everyone and helps them feel they belong. Make it fun and not a "chore."
  • Teach children to respect their bodies (spanking and/or hitting them is not teaching respect for their bodies). Allow the word "no" to be an acceptable, okay and safe word in your family. In a dangerous situation both could save your child's life.
  • Discover and celebrate your child's unique gifts and hidden talents. We're all different and unique; it's what makes us special.
  • A daily dose of love goes a long way. Give your child hugs and say, "I love you," every day.
  • When a child "acts out" they are asking, (sometimes begging) for your acknowledgment, love and attention. It's up to you as the parent to figure out what's going on and why.
  • Have family meetings where everyone's voice is welcome and heard (including babies). Keep them a pleasant and safe space where anything can be discussed.
  • Take care of yourself. Give yourself "me" time. Whether it's a fifteen minute bath everyday, a moment to take a "time-out" or "cool-down" for a few deep breaths when you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed or an hour massage once a month. Whatever is nurturing for you.
  • Establish a family ritual such as a daily evening stroll after dinner or a weekly pizza and game night. These are what create enjoyable, loving and lasting memories and give everyone something to look forward to as a family.
  • Remember that children learn about the world around them from us. Not really by what we say but by what we do. What example are you setting?
  • Always be on the lookout for ways to empower your child instead of taking their power away.
  • Catch your child being "good" and express your appreciation.
  • Talk, talk, talk. Find out what's going on. Truly listen and care. Talk with; not at and no lectures.
  • Strive to have a family where everyone is equal, including babies and younger children. We're all humans worthy of acknowledgment, dignity and respect.
  • Provide an environment where it's safe to feel and explore all feelings. It's how we express those feelings that may be appropriate or inappropriate. Make sure your child knows it is okay to have and experience all emotions.
  • Know your child's developmental level. They may not be emotionally or neurologically capable of behaving how you are expecting them to behave.
  • Diet matters. Too much sugar, caffeine (i.e. cola drinks and chocolate) and junk food can cause anyone to feel grumpy, impatient or overwhelmed.
  • Provide positive opportunities for expressing and processing emotions. Offer art supplies, musical instruments, your child's favorite CD's and something to play them on, books, paper...whatever they're into and need in order to express themselves safely. Encourage and suggest tactile, interactive activities such as gardening, water play, making mud pies, looking at cloud formations, having a picnic under a tree or going for a walk.
  • Provide a safe space your child can retreat to that's all their own. It doesn't have to be a whole room, just a comfy, cozy spot where they can go to relax and unwind preferably with some favorite, comforting things nearby. A safe retreat to go to can help shift the focus away from a situation that feels overwhelming or that has become too stressful to resolve in the moment and is just nice to have at any time.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. There are many more in the resources listed below and elsewhere. The bottom line is that children who are forced to live in an environment where they are under the threat of physical punishment, shame, humiliation or any other form of punishment are, on some level, existing in a constant state of fear. They are always in survival mode. Not an ideal place for a child to be.

Would you prefer to teach your children through fear or through love? There is no such thing as "loving punishment." Would you like to provide an atmosphere of constant fear or to provide a kind, loving and safe home? The choice is up to you.

What is Emotional Intelligence?
Perhaps one of the most fundamental teachings missing today is emotional education. Yet it is the most necessary. It is now more obvious than ever that people of all ages need assistance to better communicate their feelings and that better communication promotes more productive living.

Emotional Intelligence is:
1. Name It: A large percentage of our frustration stems from an inability to identify what it is we feel. Naming our feelings is the first step. It is a way of giving ourselves permission to have that emotion.

2. Claim It: Once we have the ability to name our feelings, we then have to communicate them in a way that others can hear us. We must learn to express ourselves beginning our discussions with "I feel" rather than "You are." Once we own our feelings, we then have the skills to transmute them.

3. Tame It: Some of us shy away from conflict because we see it as threatening. Some of us jump right in to conflict because it was all we were taught. Responding to a situation rather than reacting to it, means we are calm and looking immediately for the solution to the problem.

4. Aim It: We must approach living from a sense of wellness rather than a sense of wound. Learning the first three points awards us the gifts of empathy and understanding thereby eliminating the act of blaming and shaming. When we aim to communicate constructively, resolve conflict peacefully, we feel more empowered and lead more successful lives.
